ABOUT THE ARTISTS

                              I

Shane Hahn                      Laura Robinson                  Drew Smith

Shane Hahn

I am a forty year old sculptor and photographer living and working in the shadow of Dartmoor . Ian Miller’s pen and ink drawings were my earliest artistic influence but my inspirations are rooted in the western hermitic traditions. I work entirely with wood,  be it branch or root-stock, and incorporate found objects such as teeth, thorns and skulls. I use a range of gouges, an adze and power-tools for the creation of each piece and then smooth and dye-stain as necessary. It is my aim to comprehend and then communicate through my work the mystery, the hidden underworld of nature.

 Laura Robinson

I am  twenty-six years old, a doll maker and singer/songwriter in the Dartmoor based band The Thujones. I live in mid-Devon near Dartmoor with my partner, Shane Hahn, the sculptor and founder of Darcane Arts. I am presently designing and making a series of thirteen dolls, each with distinctive characters and personalities which will form The Village Of The Damned, a Darcane Arts collaborative project using photographs and  poetry to tell their stories. The dolls are made of painted clay. I also make the clothes using natural materials where possible. I am inspired by nature, my interest in the ancient history, religion and arcane traditions of the western world and dreamwork. I am also influenced by the Poetry and music of Jim Morrison.

Drew Smith

I am a forty year old poet living on the Devon side of the Tamar between Launceston and Holsworthy in south-west England . I write mainly nature poetry with trees and crows being regular themes as well as more philosophical/self analytical pieces. I have been published in anthologies and magazines and am presently collaborating with Shane Hahn, a sculptor and photographer. I enjoy playing with rhyme and structure and would count Dylan Thom as my earliest influence along with the lyrics of Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters. Richard Thomas and Ted Hughes are the poets I most admire.
